I was always bothered by the fact that when she had to kill someone off, she killed off one of Weasley twins. It just came across as disposing a character because, well, someone had to die.

Huh, my opinion was the opposite: killing off another friend or one of the other brothers would've been "oh, somebody had to die" and probably would've felt perfunctory.

Killing one of the twins, otoh, felt like pretty much cutting through the vague undefined rules and going straight for the too-horrible-to-contemplate choice for who to kill, because it's both killing off a comic relief character (who are usually "exempt" from trash-the-cast -- Harry's moment of complete cognitive dissonance right after it happened where he can't reconcile the universe still existing with Fred being dead resonated so hard with me), and killing off half of a pair of identical twins. I'm not an identical twin myself, so I might not know what I'm talking about, but I have a hard time thinking of many things that sound more devastating.

That's just how I personally reacted to it though. I mean, I was totally miserable that it happened -- not how it happened, not with the way it was written, just that it happened at all -- which to me is a big indicator that it was a character death done right.
