Why is IP logging on now?

Because spam trolls have been regular lately.

Thinking about leaving it on indefinitely, at least for anon commenters! This way I can report repeat problem IPs to DW, but there's no connection between usernames and IP addresses, so no way for me to connect usernames to secrets.

Wouldn't that more or less defeat the point of anon commenting, though?

How so? Nobody else can see the IPs, only me, and I'm not telling who's who! To everybody else, all anons might as well be the same anons still. It shouldn't make conversations between everyone else any more or less revealing than before, but it will keep the trolling down if everyone knows they're accountable to somebody at least.

I dunno. I know a lot of times when you've had IP logging on people have refused to post comments -- and I mean legit stuff, not trollposting. Maybe put it up to a vote?

I don't know, I've been thinking about it the past few days, and I think what FS really needs right now is more moderation. I have a few personal friends who have offered to help, I'm talking to them about it. Will let everyone know

Yup. I think it's about time to ask some friends to help though, what with all the recent trolling attempts. They've never modded anything before, but I'm sure they'll be fine, I'll guide them and all!

So far we've worked out a rotating schedule of shifts, so that two mods are online all the time to keep an eye on everyone, and we're discussing how to deal with repeat troll secrets right now. Maybe start auto-rejecting things from known repeated trolls? Or ask everyone who submits secrets to make an account and disable anon for that, just to be sure.

But how else will we make sure that FS is a safe place free of spam and trolls where everyone is afraid to disagree with each other?

I don't care if the IP logging is on. If it helps with spam control or moderation, it's fine with me.
