It's really mean-spirited for a kids' movie, especially a Dr. Seuss adaptation- the book and original animated short are dark, but they're at least cautiously optimistic. The movie just feels like everyone involved in it really did not want to make it. You're not missing much.

Yeah, it just seemed like the movie was made to kill time until they could start on Despicable Me 2.

Plus, wasn't there this visual 'blink and you'll miss it' joke where 'KILL ME' was hidden in one part of the movie?

Yeah, in a scene where the character who presumably put it there was in a really boring game of pseudo-Scrabble and couldn't leave. I hardly think that was a cry for help from the animators
