ext_81845: the character ray person from generation kill, squinting and smiling/smirking (yeah... no.)

LOL why try to understand complex characters and their motivations when can just reduce all of them to the "emotionally damaged" category and be done with it

But every single character in Evangelion is emotionally damaged. It might as well be called "Emotional Damage: The Anime"

"Emotional damage" is not a motivation, "emotionally damaged" characters (and people I might add) have personalities and motivations, have individual agency

Sure, but I think it's equally wrong to say that there's a logical analytic reason behind the actions of someone like Asuka, especially in a case like this. We know that she hated Rei for fundamentally irrational reasons related to the trauma she'd undergone; whether it was Rei's coldness and diffidence and introversion or Shinji's relation to her or both is both hard to determine. I'm also not sure how much the precise reason matters - what's more important is what it leads Asuka to do, and what her pattern of behavior is and the relationships that she maintains to the things in the world around her.
ext_81845: amuro ray from mobile suit gundam, in his underwear, from the doan's island episode (WTF?!)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2013-04-02 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL so nothing Asuka does or thinks could be rooted in anything unrelated to her trauma? I think Asuka would've been jealous of Rei even if she wasn't mentally ill (I prefer to use that term instead of "emotionally damaged", Christ)

I guess this just annoys me because I hate it when people act that way towards people with mental illness, like none of their feelings matter because all of their emotional reactions to anything are always automatically "irrational" due to their illness (oops I mean "emotional trauma"). I think Asuka had legitimate reasons to not want to be friends with Rei

I don't think this is true of mental illness in general. I think this is specifically true in Eva because everything that happens in the series is so rooted in the way that pretty much every character is deeply traumatized and / or mentally ill. Because that's what the series is about, to a pretty great extent.

Emotional trauma is not the same thing as mental illness. A person who has been traumatized is not necessarily mentally ill, and a person who is mentally ill has not necessarily been traumatized.

Asuka is definitely mentally ill though. I would say all of the pilots are mentally ill -- plenty of people are mentally ill BECAUSE they went through traumatic circumstances

The whole anime was made by a bipolar person on lithium so there you go

(Anonymous) 2013-04-03 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I feel unhappy about your last line, though. Like... I create fiction. Does that mean all my characters are mentally ill because I am a bipolar person on lithium?
ext_81845: mashmyre cello facepalming, from the anime zz gundam (facepalm)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2013-04-04 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just saying that it's not surprising that all of these characters are mentally ill considering a mentally ill person wrote and directed the show

Most people put a lot of themselves into their characters

Why did this piss so many people off wow

(Anonymous) 2013-04-03 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, fuck you.

I could write more, but, well, I'm mentally ill, so obviously it'd just be caused by my disorder, right?

I HAVE A MENTAL ILLNESS FOR THE MILLIONTH DAMN TIME I'M BIPOLAR I AND HAVE ANXIETY

Anno has bipolar disorder

I mean I think you seriously misread EVERYTHING I WROTE as I was offended by the idea of a person's actions being boiled down to just "they're emotionally damaged" as if they have no personal agency

Calm the fuck down
