Maybe game companies could start hiring a more diverse creative team. Then it wouldn't always be white people writing anyone who isn't white.

This brings up the problem that there just aren't many people that aren't white men that are interested in making games in the west, If you look at the kind of people that go into the industry, it has only really been in the last few years that we are starting to see more women and people of other ethnicity breaking into the games industry. It's not like there are lines of female or minority professionals lining up around the block trying to get into the games industry, which is notorious for its long hours, and sub-par par at the entry level.

The history of games also plays into this as it's only been since the early 2000's that gaming has started shedding it's image as a hobby for people other than basement-dwelling virgins, (of which are overwhelmingly portrayed as white and male). It also doesn't help that the style Eastern game developers favor also makes the characters seem far closer to a Caucasian ethnicity than anything else.

There is no easy or fast fix to this issue, and to say that white people should stick to only writing white people will only make the issue worse rather than better.

You SAY this, but half the women I know (literally half) want to be involved in the game industry in some way. May be long hours or sub-par entry level, but there's a lot of people out there that think game designing "sounds cool" to others.

These women bust their butts into their chosen career, and guess what? Not picked, in favor of a white man that's someone's nephew.

Literally half? Did you like, take every woman you know and poll them or something?

While that's great and I certainly would encourage anything that would get more diverse people into the industry, or really any creative industry, I'm going to have to go with the old standby of personal anecdotes don't mean much and statistics alone still heavily skew towards white men both at the application and simply the degree level.

I don't doubt your story about your friends, cronyism is a tragedy that affects every industry, as a male nurse I have been passed over by female bosses so that they can hire old classmates, who are, due to statistics of people in the industry, predominantly female themselves.

None of this changes the fact that the numbers just aren't there at the level to produce quick change, and even if there were you would still then just have women and other ethnicity workers working on games targeted at white males until publishers could be convinced to take the risk to market specifically to other demographics. It's not just entry level or even developer positions that would need to change, you would have to have your interested friends applying for marketing positions, high level management, or even being on the stockholder's board at places like EA and Ubisoft for it to change, and even then it might not matter if those changes don't attract the kind of audience that the company is looking for, because despite all of this even if it all changes, white men still hold the vast majority of purchasing power in the US, and until that changes there are no quick fixes.

That is the main point of my argument I suppose, whenever someone says that there is a simple way to fix something like this, well that's really never true in these cases. I still wish your friends luck and hope they find jobs in the industry they love, but they are most likely still going to be making games targeted at white male gamers for a long time coming.

It's a little more complicated than that. The industry is mostly populated by straight white guys because, for the past few decades, straight white guys were pretty much the sole market that the industry was trying to appeal to, often to the point of creating a hostile environment for anyone who wasn't a straight white guy. So then it becomes kind of a chicken-and-egg question, is the industry unwelcoming to them because they're not interested, or are they not interested because they feel like the industry doesn't want them?

Isn't The guy who wrote this game a Jew?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-03 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
There is an interesting relationship between black history and Jewish history in the United States, one that in no way qualifies a white Jewish man to comment on the places where our cultures don't intersect and isn't addressed in his games anyway.

Have you played the game? They do intersect, in this very game. They're both held at the very bottom of columbias social circles by the white, racist, psudo-chrisian, american-worshiping govenment.

Blacks and Jews, not blacks and whites. Keep up.

keep reaching, child.

If he's Jewish, he isn't white. He's white-passing.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-03 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Excuse me, what? White passing? What does that even mean?

Well that would depend on your definition of white, now doesn't it? Someone I know is a blue-eyed blonde Jewish woman...I mean, if that's not white I don't know what is. If you put us next to ech other, and ask random strangers which one of us is Jewish, the majority would point at me. Now, ethnically she might have some non-white roots ( so do I, actually). But, isn't there a point at which the heritage becomes negligible? I mean, if you look like a native of Sweden, not of Israel, can you really be considered non-white?

That doesn't mean they can't still culturally feel very connected to their roots, or that they can't be persecuted for their religion - but that's a different thing from being discriminated on basis of skin color.
