(Anonymous) 2013-04-03 03:30 am (UTC)(link)Ok and because of that I wouldn't think you were a racist or sexist. I just simply wonder if something like that would play a role in the interests of certain people. I imagine it would.
When I talk about fandom related things with coworkers there is an overwhelming amount of love for male and white characters even if the fandom has well written POC and female leads. There is nothing wrong with that but it strikes me as a bit off-color when SOME of those fans often rant to me about the flatness/flaws of the female or POC characters. Characters who many times share certain traits and experiences with the characters these people love. Like I said, I never outright accuse anyone of it and I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt until its absolutely certain. I don't go around thinking "hmm this person only has pretty white boys on her blog, she must be a racist and a sexist". I go "Hmm this person is ranting an awful lot about the supposed flaws of the characters she hates when these are things she overlooks in some of her other favorite characters. Is it a coincidence that a lot of them tend to be females or POC? They set the bar pretty high for these characters (either love or hate)."
