Fuck what your hairdresser says. Dye your hair red if you want to. Do it at home if that would make you feel better - or find a new hairdresser. You can always use temporary dye to try it out, or dye it back if you don't like it.

(I had the same experience with having blonde hair and wanting dark brown/black hair, by the way - I've been way happier with my appearance since I dyed my hair, even though some people have said it makes me look like a zombie :3)
