Classic Who was simpler, wasn't it. When a companion actor came to the "I think I've done enough Who for one career" stage, the companion would leave with little drama--I found this cool cause to follow, I'm tired of traveling, I'm attached to this person...yes, there were rare upgrades in the drama of a companion departure, but mostly there was this, "Bye, Doctor, I'll see you again sometime" feel to it. Nothing too awful. Now it seems companions are of the "I would never ever give this up voluntarily" ilk, so they have to come up with reasons to wrench the companions away from the Doctor involuntarily. At least they're trying to do it without killing them, for the most part.
