I'm pretty sure I'd hate that movie even if I didn't love AtLA. It was just so bad in so many ways.

I know that AtLA is technically a cartoon but I just never think of that way. I'm always kinda surprised when someone brushes it off because they don't like or are 'too old' for cartoons.

Well, one's first glance at it shows just the fact that it is a cartoon, not the thematic elements. It took me years of brushing it off (not because it was a cartoon, but...something else, I don't even remember) before watching it and being blown away.

To be completely fair, underneath the powerful thematic elements of the show is some pretty juvenile humor, especially in season 1. I can't think of any specific examples right now, but I know they were there; it was one of the reasons I had a problem getting into it, even knowing what would come later.

(Example in Legend of Korra, though: Meelo's an airbender, and during the only big battle he gets, it's essentially a fart joke. So. More of that.)
