Just watch some old stuff, then! Highlander for example; there's plenty of that type of character to be found there.

My personal favorite villain of that sort is Luther, from The Warriors.

Why did he assassinate Cyrus, pin the blame on the Warriors, and put them through hell for the whole movie? Because he "just likes doing things like that." That's his entire motivation! And it works, mostly because David Patrick Kelly is pretty good at seeming like he's insane.

Yeah. I can actually not stand most evil guys in old material because they are so bland. All this "darkness will rule because... of reasons" gets boring pretty fast.
