1. Humans are complex creatures. Cardboard villainy is unrealistic.

2. Do you really hate tragic!backstory villains or do you just hate woobifying fans? Because they'll woobify anyone, regardless of canon.

3. Go to Girl Genius for a good 'I just love being evil' villain. http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/

I agree with your #1 point.

Go watch some Investigation Discovery. Most of our craziest real life villains, the people who do nasty, NASTY shit to other people, grew up with abusive parents, or were beaten/molested/etc as a kid. Almost always.

There are very few real people who turn into legitimate psychopaths without some kind of reason behind it.

I'm not saying every villain character should have a sob story, but it helps to realize that a background makes sense. But nobody is ever happy no matter what you do. People complained that evil people were evil for the sake of being evil (like Disney villains) and now people try to sorta write them as real people who made bad choices and are now in the wrong/a really negative/evil/horrible mindset, and God forbid we see that villains, no matter how evil, are still people. Or were, if they've already lost their mind.

/shrug, /sigh
