ISPs

(Anonymous) 2013-04-03 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been using Comcast for my internet for a few years, but since I'm moving soon, I was thinking about switching to something less...douchey.

So, general question: what internet service provider do you use or have used? Would you recommend it or advise to steer clear?

Mediacom is for pretty small cities - don't get it if you don't have to.

Where are you moving to? For example, if you were to move to large cities in BC, Alberta, ON or Quebec I'd recommend Teksavvy.

Ah - right. This is what I get for trying to post questions when I'm sick. I'm in the US, moving in New Hampshire. There's one larger town we're looking at, and a smaller town nearby. But...most towns around here are on the small side, so....

Hm, yeah, NH is not very populated. In that case, maybe you can google "[Name of Town] isp [yellowpages or some other listing]" or "[Name of Town] isp review" without quotation marks and see which companies come up and what kind of internet service they are offering?

(I could've swore there's at least one regular from NH on here. If you don't get a better answer, repost the question tomorrow?)

I loved Cox Communications when I lived in Santa Barbara. I had very basic cable (I never looked into expanding my package beyond standard for the apartment building), but since I watched so many things online anyways that didn't really matter. And their internet was great and service definitely not douchey. I don't know how widespread they are, but if they are ever an option where I live I'm gonna go with them.

My parents have Time Warner and I hate them so much, augh. Even more douchey than Comcast, I think.

Not sure how long ago you had Cox, but I'd recommend everyone to stay away from them unless absolutely can not do so. They've recently had a price hike on every tier of their services, and they are constantly throttling my speed simply because my family has more than one computer on at a time. They sent us an email saying due to the heavy usage they were treating it the same as when they get people reported for large scale pirating.

Fucking bullshit.
However, when I had Time Warner in LA, it was the best ISP I've ever had. Fast, no problems and always helpful, so. :/

Really! I lived in SB 2008-2011 and never had any problems with them. There were only two computers in our apartment. Their internet was MUCH faster than Time Warner (I also now live in LA), and I never had websites randomly fail to load with Cox. On Time Warner, it does that maybe every other day- I'll get a Time Warner/Roadrunner search page instead of what I want, and then if I try again in like 10 minutes 95% of the time it loads just fine. Such a pain if I'm doing something on a deadline and an academic website won't load.

Time Warner's equipment just doesn't last, either. We've gone through 3 cable boxes and 2 modems in 4 years through no fault of our own. Their service people always seem to think we're the problem and then they come out and go, "Oh no, it really IS our fault not yours, wow!". Such a shitty attitude. Fuck 'em.

If AT&T has fiber optic where you're moving, I'd recommend them.
