Gee, I don't know. Most people have motives for the things that they do, whether we agree that they are good motives or even understandable ones is another thing all-together. After all, that old chestnut about villians being the heroes of their own stories has some truth to it. So, maybe what you're really looking for is no backstory whatsoever. Maybe you can just ignore/fast-forward/stick your fingers in your ears and close your eyes for those parts when they have them - then it can be just because.

Agreed with this -- I don't love woobified villains (actually, I can't stand them), but to enjoy a villainous character I have to have at least some appreciation and understanding of where they're coming from. There really aren't many people in the world who don't either think they're doing the right thing or know they're doing the wrong thing and have complicated feelings about it/reasons for it. Genuinely "evil for no reason" people tend not to come across as human because there's not a lot of humanity in that.

She said, posting from the account for a character who does a lot of seriously wrong things and has a lot of seriously complicated feelings about them.
