Stuff to do in New Orleans?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
My friend and I are going in a few weeks, and still don't have much of an idea of what to do there. Neither of us are drinkers, but we've been assured there are still plenty of things to do that don't necessarily involve alcohol, so...suggestions? We want to do some kind of haunted ghost tour thing, but there seems to be about a billion of them, so does anyone have a recommendation for a specific one?

Thanks for any advice!

I'd go to the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Audobon Zoo, the Aquarium of the Americas, and/or the Insectarium. The Insectarium is fabulous. Tons and tons of live and preserved insects and really interactive. Just walking around the Quarter and going into shops is really cool too.

James H. Cohen and Sons is a store in the quarter that has old coins and weapons if you're into that. I would also recommend Bourbon French Parfums and Bijounola for jewelry.

You will see signs for a Riverwalk.

Do not go there. It is actually a weird mostly empty and abandoned mall with lots of windows. I mean, walk along the river, but don't go in Riverwalk (unless you like empty malls and being creeped out).

Jazz Legends Park on Bourbon Street has $5 cocktails and a good band. Also Beignets!

You can get really awesome food at French Market.

I went on a swamp tour which was totally awesome, and I went on a day-long tour of several different plantations. There's also just walking around the French Quarter, lots of little shops to check out there. There's walking tours of the Garden District and the cemeteries, both of which are a lot of fun if you're interested in history, architecture, whatever. I went on one of the ghost tours and it was actually pretty boring since its basically walking around the city at night while some dude tells you ghost stories.

I spent a week there a couple years ago and went on an arranged tour every other day and spent the rest of the time bumming around the city checking things out on my own. If you're willing to drop a lot of money on food while you're in the city, New Orleans also has some absolutely amazing restaurants.

sa, I should say, if you're really lost as to what to do or short on cash, you can probably find a list of like, "top 50 things to do in New Orleans" if you search. A lot of times just going down a list like that can be really fun. When I went I had a po' boy from some famous shop, and some beignets from cafe du monde. It's cheesy and touristy, but still fun.

Coops, restaurant on Decatur. Awesome food and most of it is around $10.
