The whole series is just preaching the 'buyer beware' lesson. Something that seems too good to be true, probably is. Kyubei can't make them sign a contract and he seems pretty open with the information.
The only tragedy is that the ideal energy is the misfortune of young girls who are naive. Though Kyubei doesn't understand human emotion, so he doesn't come off as creepy. If he DID understand human emotion and was doing this all for the lulz (and not for the bigger picture) than yeah he would be creepy.
