What's the OS you're running? Anything before 10.7 I'm pretty sure needs OnyX to help keep it running efficiently, especially on a laptop. If it's still locking up, you may need to pay attention to the Activity Log and try to deal with RAM-eaters. (I know Firefox eats RAM like mad, but you can get RamBack for it, and there's an app called FreeMemory that will clean up your RAM as well.)

If it's still doing it, if there's an Apple store in your area, I'd really suggest making an appointment with the Genius bar. They can help out with stuff like this and give you advice - and they don't charge for anything unless they actually determine that something needs to be fixed or replaced. They're really good about getting shit running again with the lowest cost to the customer.
