Kinda tired of it, too. A character can be unsympathetically evil and yet still a complex person one can relate to. Average people are always doing awful things because we're angry, or greedy, or ignorant, or arrogant, or afraid. What about villains who are as petty and cruel as everyday people are, except with the ability to demonstrate their pettiness and cruelty on a grand scale? I don't have to want to give them a hug because of their terrible past in order to nod and think, "Yeah, give me enough power and I might be a total shithead, too."

Those are always my favorite villains, evil because they get something tangible out of it, not because they're nuts, or inherently corrupt, or wounded, or secretly have good motivations.

...aaaand off I go to read Naruto and be disappointed by its increasingly whiny villains.
