Why does it have to be either/or? Two of my favorite villains, Seto Kaiba and Vegeta, have tragic backstories that explain why they're such assholes. Do they still like being assholes? OH BOYHOWDY.

(Before anyone says that they're anti-heroes, don't forget that they started off as some pretty serious villains. Their character arcs only took them so far as neutral, and they have no desire to go any further. I say it counts.)
