Now that I think about it, while kidnapping is pretty damn bad, I wonder exactly what she did in the past to protect the flower. Certainly someone else had stumbled upon it before.

I'd like to know more about Gothel and how she found the flower. How did she know what it did? How did she know the song, did she just make it up? How did the guards know it would save Rapunzel's mother?

Yeah, this. I know the origin of how everyone else found it (I do really like the movie), but...I understand we won't get all of that exposition in the movie.

But didn't the movie pretty much answer the last question. Seems to me like it was implying that flowers formed from sun drops are a fairly well known myth in that universe along with the fact that they will heal. So when she got sick, they went out looking for a miracle, because that is what you do for your beloved queen I guess. They just got lucky that in this case myth turned out to be a little more truthful than normal.

now this has me wondering if those flowers used to be very commonplace, but humans wasted them. for all we know gothel drove the plant to extinction.

... like, imagine if gothel and her friends and family just had to watch as their guaranteed vessel for immortality was stripped away from them with each dying plant, and they as people finally had to realize their own fragility and die. gothel could have very well watched all of her friends and family die out with that flower. gothel could have been the last of a generation of 'immortal' people.

damn.

It's shown in the movie that she originally had it hidden under a basket made to look like a bush. The night it was discovered by the knights or whatever, she was too hasty putting it back and accidentally knocked it away as she ran. I just assumed it was too far out of the way for anybody else to have stumbled upon it by accident before.
