Farting cats

(Anonymous) 2013-04-04 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have a cat, have you ever heard or smelled it fart?

I never did until the cat I have now. He farts a lot. I've only heard it once, but it stinks, and he always does it on my lap, or in my bed, or when I pick him up. My other cat doesn't, nor do any other cats I know.

Anyone else have a flatulent cat? What can be done about it?

My cat's not farty, but I've had dogs who were. Sometimes it's due to age, but if it's a young cat, it might be mild gastrointestinal issues. Can you try changing his food? Possibly to something for sensitive stomachs.

Either way, as long as he's otherwise healthy (no runny stools and whatnot), there probably isn't too much to worry about. But if you want to cut down on the gas, I think a change of diet might be in order.

This. When we first got mine she was really gassy, but as soon as we switched from Purina to Iams it went away completely. She rarely ever farts now.

My Siamese farts. She sticks her butt in my face and lets loose. She's just proud of her digestive tract, since she announces that she's heading for the litter box because she wants people to watch her.

If you're concerned about it though, you can ask the vet. Maybe it's just a reaction to the food he's eating. Or it could just be he's a farty cat. Or it could be something else. But if you're really concerned and just want an answer, call the vet.

My cat who passed away used to fart all the time. She was such a delicate looking lady, but her farts were foul. My boy farts sometimes, but they don't make me run for the hills. My dog on the other hand has awful sulfuric farts that follow you. I blame it on the fact that my mom likes to give her eggs.

Your cats farting might be a dietary thing, or it might just be a farter. But if it worries you, take your kitty to the vet and they'll be able to help you.

When I had cats, they wouldn't fart a LOT, but when they did, you'd never hear it. And it'd smell AWFUL. I miss cats, but not that part of them, lol.

Heh, we had a flatulent cat. Look into changing their diet - there's specially formulated diets, especially for indoor cats, that reduce odours a bit.

I've had four cats who were especially flatulent, and the two who are still around still are, though a change in diet did help somewhat. They all came from the same barn and are all related, so I guess delicate tummies could just run in their family, I dunno. But anyway, one of them, Mal, always rapidly twitches his tail right before he lets one, which earned him the nickname of Twitchy-poo. I used to think his were pretty bad until we brought his younger cousin home. Sweet, elegant, demure little Yuna has such profoundly vile emissions that she has driven dachshunds out of the room with them. The vet isn't too concerned, but that may well be because she knows that there is no solution to be found in the world of mundane science. I wonder what my dad's old exorcist buddy is charging these days...

I had a cat who had a reaction to some antibiotics that made him fart. The funny thing was that it scared him and every time he farted, he would run.

The very best one was when he was licking himself and he farted in his own face.

Poor cat. I still miss him. :(

What can be done about it?

Give hime some Paracetamol. Maybe with a side helping of very dark chocolate.

Wow, that is Not Cool. :(

(For anyone that might take the above advice seriously - don't.)

Mine used to unleash SBDs regularly when he was a kitten. Luckily he grew out of it, but for a while, he'd be sitting on my lap purring away and suddenly, without warning I'd be enveloped in this cloud of stench.
