Chicago violent crime rate per 1000: 10.33
Dallas violent crime rate per 1000: 6.82
Salt Lake City violent crime rate per 1000: 6.4
Phoenix violent crime rate per 1000: 5.5

Hey, look. The city where law-abiding citizens are almost completely disarmed has a (surprise!) really high violent crime rate.

Not that I necessarily think that chart is fake or that the point isn't valid, but...two of the listed sources are plainly biased. That's a good way to torpedo one's credibility.

It would probably be hard to find any numbers that weren't considered biased, to be honest. Especially since the NRA has blocked any research in that area for years.

But I think looking at the many different posts it's clear that lax gun laws do not automatically translate into lack of crime, nor does strict gun control laws mean higher violent crime rate.

And Dallas has some of the least restrictive gun laws in the nation, yet it comes in second with a rate that is fewer than 4 points away from Chicago's. It should be far lower if arming citizens has as big an impact as is claimed.

Dallas isn't "second in the nation," at least as far as I know. That's a bunch of random cities I picked. Chicago has strict gun control laws, the other three don't.

Hell, Phoenix and Salt Lake City have open carry, with no permit. And, look, it's not the OK Corral in those places. Stunning, I know.

I did not say "second in the nation." I said simply "second," because it was in second place on that list.

They also aren't bastions of peace and prosperity where no crime happens ever, which is the characterization that a lot of gun advocates give to places where laws are loose.

The fact is that crime happens either way, and that neither eliminating guns nor arming everyone would change that on its own. Reasonable people can recognize that and disagree about where to strike the balance and about what can be done to address the underlying issues. But you are not a reasonable person, and you fail to recognize that you've been mocked for that, not for being a gun owner.

You really need to learn to differentiate between crime and violent crime. Also, not all violent crime is committed using a gun. In Phoenix, the majority of violent crimes do not involve a firearm.

The point is that the argument that "if gun laws were more relaxed, there would be no crime" is as ridiculous as the argument that "if gun laws were more strict, there would be no crime." Whether violent crime is committed with a gun or not, its prevalence or scarcity is used by both sides to support positions that are ultimately too simplistic to do much good.

The only reason Dallas is second place on the list is because it's the second city I looked at out of the four. I could have put NYC on the list, at 7.92 violent crimes per 1000 people. Or Washington DC, with 12.02.

Dunno about Salt Lake but for the last few years Phoenix actually has unrestricted carry, which means anyone who can legally own a gun can also legally carry it concealed without a permit. Basically, just assume everyone there is armed and move on to the next place if you want to commit a crime.

The Utah legislature passed a law for unlimited concealed carry (as long as the gun was two actions away from firing), but the Governor vetoed it. However, it passed by a wide majority and will easily override that veto if they call back a special session to do so.

Or shoot them with your own gun, obviously. As the poster above states, there are other factors involved and reasonable people don't consider either way a magic spell to stop crime.

Texas has some of the least restrictive gun laws in the nation, but Dallas doesn't. The city has a lot more gun control laws than the state does.

And a higher violent crime rate in comparison to the rest of the state.
