is poly a sexual orientation?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
What do you think? Genuinely curious

"Poly" meaning being in non-monogamous relationships of any kind

I find it's best not to talk about this. It makes people pissed off.

I wouldn't think so. Polygamous or monogamous doesn't convey whether or not you have restrictions based on someone's individual identity, but your restrictions or lack thereof about relationships as an experience. But I could be wrong.

No I would think it's like an add on to the sexual orientation you already have
like you're a lesbian who is also polygamous
or a lesbian who is also monogamous

This.

They're basically styles of relationships/preference or belief towards relationship as opposed to 'Hey, I find you sexually attractive!' like sexual orientations are.

Wasn't there some extended Dan Savage drama about this recently? Just saying, if the opinions of FS don't satisfy your curiosity there is some reasonably fresh wank out there.

I think orientations and labels are primarily for the comfort and peace of mind of those who want them. As dumb as I think plenty of the orientations people come up with these days are, as long as they're not personally asking me my opinion I'm not going to give it to them.

I'd say that it's part of someone's sexual identity, but not a sexual orientation. It doesn't, after all, describe who the person wants to be in a polyamorous relationship with.

cop-out answer? depends on what you think a sexual orientation is.

a lot of people think it only encompasses gender or sex of attraction. people from the queer theory sect generally argue that this is a narrow view of sexuality.

personally, i think a sexual orientation can encompass a lot of different things (and i have definitely known people that are more comfortable being polygamous than monogamous and vice versa).

the trouble arises when people compare being poly to (for example) being gay, because these are totally different parts of sexual orientation and gender&sex have a whole different cart full of baggage. apples & oranges imo. very sexy apples and oranges
