I was a shitty beta once

Ironically, I did that once, even though I hated it when people did it to me. And I believe people NEED betas because of the problems you listed. I bet the same thing happened to Shakespeare. No, I'm serious. Writers need feedback first.

Just a tip that's hopefully welcome - make sure your beta knows what they're getting into. I think what happened with me and possibly with others is that they don't realize how long it's going to be, or that there's things they're not comfortable reading, that sort of thing.

Of course, the biggest thing is that betas need to be honest, and unfortunately a lot of them end up finding it easier to disappear than to say "sorry, other things came up." :/

"make sure your beta knows what they're getting into"

So true. This sort of communication from the start can save you both a lot of grief and misunderstandings. And if writers aren't automatically forthcoming, betas should really ask the important questions (for their own sanity).

I would add: have multiple betas.

I sometimes beta for a friend who runs her work through a few people before she sends it to me. Why does she do this? Well, the people in line ahead of me are fantastic at recognizing continuity, characterization, and general plot errors. However, I catch spelling and grammar mistakes that the others tend to miss. If I were one of the first to read it, then she would have to send it back to me after adding or subtracting chunks of story.

Different beta readers have different strengths and weaknesses. Recognize that and utilize them.
