Jerk Authors/Fanfic pet peeves

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2013-04-05 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Read a fic today. It was a pairing I love and an AU plot I enjoy. Character A's wife is in a coma and is raising his son alone. Character B is raising his daughter alone. Ends up with the Character A going back to his wife, and Character B being alone with not so unrequited love.

Not only was the story not tagged Unhappy Ending/Downer Ending, the ONLY pairing tagged was for Character A/Character B. The wife (who is a canon character in that verse) wasn't even tagged in the Character list.

The only saving grace was that as soon as the wife was mentioned, I got paranoid and skipped to the end. Or I would have wasted time reading a 25,000 word story that would have just left me angry and miserable. The only thing that would have been worse is surprise Major Character Death.

Give me some of your miserable stories.

I read all of nostalgia_lj's hilarious Ten/Donna stories and Torchwood macro parodies and was on the verge of reccing her when I found out what an utterly revoltingly despicable human being she is. She colored my perception of all her stuff :\

Why utterly revolting and despicable? I think I've seen some of her work before, but I don't know anything about her...

Re: Jerk Authors/Fanfic pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding the anon above me, how is she a despicable human being?

Re: Jerk Authors/Fanfic pet peeves

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Side-eyeing you really hard right now. Not only have I never seen any evidence of her being an "utterly revolting despicable human being" but it reeks of bullshit when some anon badmouths somebody and doesn't show anything supporting it. Since you used her name instead of keeping making a general statement about someone's personality/actions coloring your perception, I can only imagine you just want to smear her name.

Re: Jerk Authors/Fanfic pet peeves

She's insulting, she's dismissive, she's mocking, she refuses to give any credence or respect to other peoples' opinions (she once sneered [paraphrasing] "bitch, please, she's useless and only serves as a warning of what can happen to you" when talking about the possibility of a character she dislikes having a positive effect on the plot and has claimed that an emotional scene between two characters she doesn't ship "doesn't make sense" because she doesn't like them together).

She's UNBELIEVABLY hypocritical: she mocks fans for doing the exact same things she does, she dismisses people's claims that a character was OOC in one episode as ridiculous childish whining only to herself start claiming another character that she likes was OOC to excuse the fact that he did something that doesn't fit her view of what the character is like. She complains that a character's statements about another character don't matter because they didn't make sense to her, then turns around and claims that a different character's feelings about another character should be crystal clear because they kissed. She drips all over her OTP and then talks about how immature and revolting shippers of a different -- NOT a rival -- OTP are, and not just for their choice of ship, but specifically for engaging the exact behavior she engages in.

Also, she cannot write a single story without shoehorning in a scene of the Doctor and River Song hooking up and River fixing all the Doctor's problems with perfect advice, even when such a scene falls way outside the scope of both the canon situation at the time and the plot of the fic in question.

However, she still really, really does write some really good fic. I fully give her that.

Yeah, I started to read a fic that was tagged "Canon Character I Like A"/"Canon Character I like B", with no other relationships mentioned in the Relationship Tag and no characters aside from those two mentioned in the Character Tag (it was on AO3). Plus, the notes at the beginning notes said it as porn. "Yay!", right? Nope, it was one of the above-mentioned characters having sex with an OC. What. The. Fuck?! Seriously, people, tag your stories properly.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Infidelity not being tagged is a biggy for me, and it's something I seem to run into a lot. People think that they only have to tag the main 'ship and all else is hand waved away.

This, this exactly. I'm annoyed by how often I see "married but LOL fell in love on a cruise ship" as an unwarned for twist where I'm suppose to emphasize with these characters. Just...it squicks me, and it wastes my time. TAG YOUR SHIT.

Reading that 100,000+ word fic thinking "Oh, this doesn't have loads of annoying side pairings like all the rest, it's actually focusing on the pairing I came here to read!"

Getting distracted about 3/4-ish way through it, still without those annoying side pairings just put in for the sake of it.

Picking it back up again later, only to find the last 1/4 has tons of side pairings and so will the sequel. And they aren't really side pairings anymore, they are taking over things.

I understand not spoiling, but why the fuck can't you just list your side pairings, or even just say that they'll be THERE, Hetalia fandom. -_-

I'm annoyed when authors feel the need to pair up *every* character during the course of a fic, as if it doesn't count as a happy ending if the entire supporting cast isn't in a relationship with another character we've seen on-screen. The fic might only show the build-up of the main ship and then suddenly we find out "And everyone else got married, too. The end." It gets even sillier when some of those characters have canonical partners who have been mentioned but never actually seen, but the characters are rendered single for the sole purpose of pairing them off with another supporting character.

My friend once recced me a really depressing fic at a time I wasn't feeling well. She gave me no warning and the story itself had no warnings. Since she didn't say anything I assumed it wasn't anything bad. Oh no. This thing was set in an apocalyptic dystopian future, had the main character crippled in a way that hits close to a very real fear of mine, had rape and other forms of sexual abuse, and infidelity.

I had a talk with my friend after that and how to rec me shit.

Uh, more minor thing... this has happened to me a couple of times. I get really far into a fic and suddenly the characters will get very OOC for no reason, or surprise mpreg, or it's not rape if you orgasm, or surprise torture. Really, I could go on. I just don't like wasting my time with stuff or really liking something for it to then all be wasted. Essentially it's the same rant as the people above me. Please tag your fic, people.

I read this fic, and it was genuinely really good in the beginning, nice au. I get to the last chapter where characters A & B finally have sex, but A is bottoming, which I was not expecting at all. I really don't like it when A bottoms, but I ignore it because it's almost the end.
THEN CHARACTER B DIES. IN PRETTY MUCH ONE SENTENCE THEY DIE AND DISAPPEAR AND THE FIC ENDS THERE.
AND IN THE NOTE AT THE END? WARNS FOR MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH.
The fic wasn't tagged for major character death or anything. I mean, what is the point of warning for it A LINE AFTER IT HAPPENS?

Consensual sex with some D/s overtones became gang-rape. I would've really liked to be warned about the gang-rape...

I hate reading those stories that are tagged as A/B and nothing else, but it turns out that it will be that way only at the very end, while the rest of the story will be A/C, A/OCs and B/OCs. You want to build up to a relationship, fine, but don't tag it as the only pairing.

Nowadays I just quit reading the moment I reach the first untagged character/OC pairing, because I've wasted my time with them before.

Other pet peeve would be the unfinished WIPs, but what can you do? Sometimes people just lose their interest in writing.

I was reading this really well-written and highly recommended fic. The fic was marked as gen, but about 4/5 of the way through, a pairing (that I happen to dislike) popped up out of nowhere. A couple of reviewers suggested that the author tag the pairing and the author said that s/he thought it didn't need to be tagged because their romance wasn't the main plot (even though it pretty much took over the rest of the fic and ruined it for me). TBH, I think the author purposely didn't mention the pairing because it's unpopular and contradicts the most popular ship, and s/he knows that most people would pass on it.

The author also didn't tag/warn for a really gruesome death because it would spoil the fic.

Recently I was reading a D/C fic, when suddenly their was surprise S/G sex. The author had never tagged for S/G and it was really really really bad OOC to the hilt sex.

I don't mind S/G, but I'd like to know if I'm about to read about them randomly boning in a fic that doesn't star them at all.

Also a friend in high school once gave me a bunch of fic to read and it was all non-con torture. I would have liked to have been told that before I started mulling through her fics.

Surprise mpreg

I'm okay with pregnancy
I'm okay with children/adoption

But mpreg squicks me the fuck out and I'd like to be warned so I don't have to even both (or can stop reading at appropriate point)

It started out as Character A/Character B fluff. I liked the pairing and was enjoying it until a couple chapters in, when they're in bed and suddenly Character A stabs Character B and starts eating him. It was one of the first fanfics I ever read, and I honestly can't even remember what the fandom was, but I must've been pretty young and remember being completely traumatized.

when they're in bed and suddenly Character A stabs Character B and starts eating him.

Nyargh. That's terrible, that.

Reminds me of a time, a few years back, I was looking for some...ah...anatomical studies of a character from a game I'd been playing. The first several pictures I found of her were murdered and dismembered.

Gragh.

When two characters have been building up to sex or a relationship in a fic, then as soon as they have sex they start dropping "I love you"s and acting in ridiculously schmoopy ways, when this really doesn't a) fit the tone of the story prior to this or b) makes them terribly ooc.

Hey, so here's a question: If you run into an inappropriately tagged fic, should you mention it to the author? If so, in the comments, or privately (though I'm not sure AO3 even has that)? I was temped to do that with the fic I found, but didn't.

Ok. Actually, I only see two comments on this thing altogether (one of which is the author replying to a comment). I'm kind of wondering if I should bother...

There was a fic posted in my tiny fandom that listed my f/f OTP and was tagged romance/fluff. I got super super excited. The fic set up a cute scenario for them... and then in chapter two did a complete bait and switch where A let B down gently because she wasn't gay. This caused B to rethink her life and realise her crush on A was just friendship and then went and got married to random-canon-dude-C.

Which fine if that's the story you want to tell? But I've always suspected it was a direct response to a couple of shippy fics I had posted to FFN where A&B hooked up. It all just felt too pointed not to be. (Down to things like reusing some headfanon from my stuff.)

It really, really upset me actually. Because I was in the process of coming out (which is probably part of why I'd written the fic, tbh) and I was braced for shit IRL, but ended up blindsided in fandom. I don't blame the author for that - s/he couldn't know - but I still thought disguising bashfic like that was kind of a jerkface thing to do.
