Oh! And I would hasten to add: being "actually published" doesn't have anything to do with writing "well enough," which you would know if you truly had any knowledge of the industry. It involves knowing the right people and getting them to shill for you. You can write like absolute crap and still land a contract if you grease the right palms.

The reason people self-publish isn't because they aren't good enough. It's because the publishing industry revolves around personal favors and nepotism.

I'm...actually defending the fact that they self-publish and rejecting the idea that to be a "real writer" you have to get picked up by a publishing house.
