Nope, sorry. Google "Sean Connery hitting women." He thinks it's okay to slap women who won't stop talking about something or are being "bitches" or "hysterical."

All the results on the first 5 pages are people saying he said that, which isn't the same as him actually having said that.

Not a clip of the first interview where he said it (I don't know that it ever made it on to the Internet although I assume it's probably somewhere if you really want to go looking for it) but of an interview with Barbara Walters in 1987 where he discusses the infamous interview and says he hasn't changed his opinion.

Barbara Walters: You did an interview in which you said "it's not the worst thing to slap a woman now and then." As I remember you said you "don't do it with a clenched fist, it's better to do it with an open hand." Remember that?
Sean Connery: Yeah.
BW: Yeah. I didn't love that.
SC: I didn't change my opinion.
BW: You haven't?
SC: No, not at all.
BW: You think it's good to slap a woman?
SC: No, I don't think it's good.
BW: But you don't think it's bad?
SC: I don't think it's that bad. I think that it depends entirely on the circumstances and if it merits it.
BW: What would merit it?
SC: Well, if you have tried everything else, and women are pretty good at this, they can't leave it alone. They want to have the last word and you give them the last word but they're not happy with the last word. They want to say it again, and get into a really provocative situation. Then, I think, it's absolutely right.

So...basically the same thing that would make most men hit another man is also what would make him hit a woman, just with an open instead of closed hand. I don't think hitting anyone is right just because you're angry, but I really don't see all that much of an issue here (going off the transcript; youtube is blocked at my office). There is a difference between hitting someone and beating them.

I still think he's wrong, but it doesn't read nearly as bad as He thinks it's okay to slap women who won't stop talking about something or are being "bitches" or "hysterical." made it out to be. He didn't say either of the things that were supposedly quoted, nor did he say it was okay to slap a woman who wouldn't stop talking about something. He actually used the word "provocative" and talked about escalating arguments, specifically saying "...if you have tried everything else...". How he handles/handled those situations still isn't appropriate, but it's much more relateable than what was described earlier.

The date of the interview is very important for context; throughout the 80s there were huge changes in women's roles and positions in the western world. This interview in 1987 is referencing an earlier (unknown date) interview, which would have taken place in a time when women were demanding both equality and chivalry. It was very common for men to respond by doing the exact opposite of what chivalry had required of them before, sometimes to extremes. I'm more interested to know if he believes this in 2013, not that he believed it 26 years ago.

His age is also another important thing to take into context; someone whose formative years were during WWII wasn't raised with the same values as someone whose formative years were in the 90s or later. My grandparents were about 20 years older than Sean Connery and their social views made me cringe. Society evolves and often elderly people have values/views/beliefs that no longer fit the society they live in despite the fact that they did at one time.

No, it's pretty bad. He is basically saying that it is acceptable to hit a woman who is harping on him. A man who hit a man in the same situation would most likely be an asshole too.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
That's not the same as what you first said.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, dear: someone's really desperate not to face the truth aren't they? Connery is a misogynistic arse. End.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Welcome back, radfem. We missed you. Oh that's right, we didn't!

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmmmm. I don't think you need to be a radical feminist to get "Connery is a misogynistic arse" out of this material. I can see that there is also an argument for him not being irredeemable, but it isn't a stretch to declare him an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
Go back to /r/mensrights, anon, be that kind.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
it's not really "radical" to think saying slapping a woman is permissible if she's giving you lip is misogynistic shit and makes you an asshole

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
Is this a misfire? AYRT asked the question before the answer was posted.
