Re: I think I take last names and throwaway lines a bit too seriously

I completely agree with this. My headcanon is that Natalia Romanova was the Red Room agent, Natasha Romanoff is what they decided to call her when she came over to SHIELD so that she had a new start, but it wasn't so different from her real name (and Natasha is a diminutive of Natalia anyway). The distinction is important to me, personally, and my general backstory for her MCU version is heavily influenced by the comics. It might be a butchering of her surname, but I still think it's a necessary distinction.
