Attraction to unattractive/strange-looking people

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I was watching some of the baffling vitriol between people who are convinced Benedict Cumberbatch is drop dead gorgeous vs people who think he's nothing special vs people who think he's hideous vs people who not only think he's hideous but are personally offended by the existence of people who think he's gorgeous, and I thinking -- surely, all these groups can recognize WHY the other groups think that way, can't they? Hasn't unexpected attraction to a unconventional-looking person happened to them before? Haven't they been confused at some people's drooling over a person they thought was ugly?

So how about you guys? Have you ever been really attracted to a person who you objectively know looks weird/unconventionally attractive to most people?

Going by the fact that I think almost every male celebrity is pretty unattractive, I would guess that most of the people I'm attracted to are unattractive or strange looking to most people.

Personality means much more to me than looks. Sometimes I think I'm only attracted to physically unattractive men.

Same, personality goes a long way

Haha yep, I actually somewhat liked Bendydick before I found out what an entitled classist rich boy he is.

I don't like Cumberbottoms at all but I've never seen anything indicating he's entitled or classist. He's a rich kid who was sent to rich kid schools, but that doesn't automatically make him entitled or classist.

I sort of a have a crush on a classmate who's only slighty taller than me (and I'm 5'2. He's not ugly but there are better looking dudes at my university.

Honestly I kind of doubt people saw Benedict Cumberbatch's face for the first time and thought "that guy is hot" and "that guy is beautiful". Maybe they were attracted to his voice/his personality/the characters he plays and after that they got "used" to his face and started finding him physically attractive?

Alfie Allen
James Woods
Steve Buscemi (before he got old)
Jeff Goldblum

I like weird looking dudes, especially people with distinctive facial features. But I do like conventionally attractive dudes that lots of people like (like Ewan McGregor or Eric Bana)

Wait, what, Jeff Goldblum is weird looking? When did this happen? :/

practically all the guys I've ever dated have been "ugly" guys. some people even laugh at my celebrity crushes (imo, seth rogen is the hottest guy ever).

I used to say that I was shallow and wasn't about to hide it, but eventually I realized that I really am a "personality is what counts" kind of person. which is good I guess!

i'm largely attracted to people who are unconventionally attractive/conventionally unattractive. not exclusively, but it seems like a lot of the guys i'm drawn to are the ones that make people go "really?"

that all said, i can easily be turned off of peoples' good looks if they turn out to be a huge dick. not sure how that works, but it does.

I don't think it's so much a 'there is no way I can even being to comprehend you being attracted to that being', but more a social inclusion thing. Like, the face we even talk about 'unconventionally' attractive people points to the fact that there are some people who it is socially acceptable to find attractive. So people are reluctant to admit their attraction outside particular parameters because it threatens their social inclusion (for another example think of guys who are atracted to and date fat women but won't let them meet their friends and family because they are douchebags embarrassed).

On the flipside, people get riled up about other people's preferences because for some hearing that people think differently to them is threatening to their sense of self and the basis of their social inclusion on levels they probably don't even realise.

But if armchair evolutionary psychology isn't for you, I'd also say that trolling Benadryl Sillypants Butterworth Crumblycheese Bibblyboo Codswallop Benedict Cumberbatch fans is kind of hilarious.

(In answer to your original question, gods yes.)
