"Gay marriage"

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity, why is it called "gay marriage" and not "gender neutral marriage" in English?

The latter is a bit of a mouthful, and it's for the same reason it was called 'women's suffrage'--the issue in question concerns a specific group and establishing civil liberties for them.

Phrases like that add to the special snowflake image.

Re: "Gay marriage"

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Because a marriage should be happy!!

(Seriously, I don't know.
...And I rather like the way the French call that law they are passing: "mariage pour tous", marriage for all, encompassing mixed, same-gender and same-sex marriage. For straight and L-G-B and T and whatever.)

Re: "Gay marriage"

Hello, potential fellow French anon!

I am growing tired of all that debating. I just want the law to be voted once and for all. Frigide and co were fun to laugh at for a while, now they're getting nasty and scary. I want it to be over and those people to go back to whatever dark holes they've crawled out of.

On a side note: I can't wait to see their faces when they finally discover that marriage for all is not the final achievement of LGBTQ rights.

Well, a lot of English-speaking people do tend to call it "marriage equality" when talking about rights (e.g., "fighting for marriage equality"). Because the US only has a binary gender marker system, equating same-sex marriage with opposite-sex marriage under the law does actually help transgender folks, as well, because transitioning would no longer nullify a previously-legal marriage. I'm hoping the national law's language will simply expand to encompass any consenting adults (thus technically including non-binary folks and protecting a transitioning person's marriage), rather than trying to specify "types" of marriage based on the legally recognized sex of the individuals.

There are a lot of people who either use same-sex marriage or marriage equality. Gay marriage usually, in my opinion, gets tossed around to emphasized the sexuality aspect. This is typically done by people who want to remind people that LGBTQ people marrying is different, when really marriage is marriage, and the only difference in marriage between a man and a woman and two women or two men is that the first is legal basically everywhere (aside from obvious restrictions on age, incest, etc.) and the latter is still not allowed in a lot of places.

Re: "Gay marriage"

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Because we want people to support it, not roll their eyes at it.

Re: "Gay marriage"

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Because the issue is about if gay people can marry or not, so it's establishing which group is being talked about, and what right is under debate.

Potato, potato

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Let's call the whole thing "marriage".

Re: "Gay marriage"

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Same sex marriage" is what a lot of people use. Or "marriage equality". Gay marriage is actually falling out of favor in wider circles.

Re: "Gay marriage"

(Anonymous) 2013-04-06 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
What wider circles? Where? Not in LA, NYC, Chicago, or Las Vegas. Not in the mainstream media (including extreme leftist), and not in any of the online forums I've been in that are specifically about the issue.

holy shit, how do you manage to live in 4 cities at once?! You must, to know everything about all of them. Amazing.

NAYRT

Some people travel a lot. My roommate is gone half the time because she has to travel to three different places for her work.

East coast. Mainstream media waffles back and forth on gay marriage vs same sex marriage. A lot of the activist/awareness groups I'm involved in are all pushing "same sex marriage", as well as a lot of the online forums I've been involved in. We must just be in very different wider circles. It happens.

doesn't sound like a very wide circle

How so?

The east coast is a pretty wide circle, tbh.

We're lazy and like shorter things. Also something something sounds less pretentious. Also, we're lazy and don't like changing things that are already in the public consciousness like that phrase is.

Probably in twenty-thirty years it'll just be 'marriage' and anyone who ascribes any special descriptors to it will get looked at funny.

because it's easier for str8 people to understand

Because it's easier to rally up antipathy against it that way, while still using a non-offense term. Like "climate change" instead of "global warming".

Many advocates of gay marriage refer to it as "same sex marriage" or "equal marriage" but the chances of getting the conservative media outlets that so often dominate public conversation (i.e. they're what grandma listens to) to use these terms are less than zero.

Because gay people are getting married. I prefer 'same-sex' marriage, myself.
