What was so terrible about the previous time(s) you were taken in? I mean, at least you acknowledge that he could be trans, and that's good, but like... why would you care so much that you suspect this stuff? Does it matter if he's not actually gay?

I think there's some concern about appropriation, if for instance they turn out to be a straight cis woman. I'm a gay (trans) guy and have in the past gotten excited over someone else claiming to be a gay guy, because they are so rare in fandom and here was finally someone who I thought I could relate to in terms of certain life/social experiences, and then they turned out to be actually (cis) female and I just felt hugely betrayed.
