An ally is someone who isn't queer (using queer to encompass LGBT, two-spirited, genderqueer, asexual, etc. etc.) but supports queer rights/thinks they should have basic human rights.

Apparently, people who claim to be allies but don't do much in terms of helping the cause are a big problem in some places. (I don't doubt this is a thing and can be a problem, but I don't buy the idea that self-proclaimed "allies" are a bigger problem than homophobia and transphobia either.)
