Re: An odd confession
(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 01:05 am (UTC)(link)I don't know Hayao Miyazaki and google tells me he has done an enormous amount of work. Any recs on a good starting point? I'm more interested in animation than manga, at least to start.
Re: An odd confession
Mmm. Well my favs are "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke." Spirited Away is one of Miyazaki's most accessible works in the West and I love the animation and the storyline. It has cutish animation, but also has very dark aspects to it.
Princess Mononoke is very eco-central, and has great outdoor animation. It is a bit more grown-up (for lack of a better term) than Spirited Away. It also makes me cry every time.
I'd also suggest My Neighbor Totoro as you like the Appa & Momo eps in Avatar. It's also focused more to a younger crowd (more than Spirited Away I think), but everyone who I have showed it to has liked it. (Like all Miyazaki moves it has heavy themes in it as well like death.)
If you watch any of them, let me know what you think :)
