rant

(Anonymous) 2013-04-07 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I had a lengthy rant typed up in response to a certain comment in the thread for #11, but I backspaced the whole thing at last minute because fuck that. That thread doesn't need any more wankbait than it already has.

An abridged version of the rant: I'm so fucking sick of the assumption that anyone who reads slash or femmeslash or het or any kind of shipping fic at all MUST be in it for the smut or because they're attracted to the characters. And how that assumption leads to the assumption that shipping preferences correspond to sexual orientation.

"Lesbians who read slash? LOL THEY'RE SECRETLY STRAIGHT."
"Straight women who read femmeslash? LOL THEY'RE SECRETLY GAY."
"Asexuals who read anything that isn't gen? LOL THEY'RE SECRETLY NOT ASEXUAL."

No. Stop it. Just fucking stop it.

I initially skipped that because of size but you made me curious. And yeah, it's a dumb secret. Orientation has little to do with most shipping preferences and/or fic preferences.

By that logic I am a pansexual robosexual zoophilic xenophile. And probably some other things I forgot too. (Hint: I'm not any of those things.)

By which I mean, agreed.

YES.

Yeeeeah this. Enjoying two people in a ship that doesn't match your sexuality doesn't change that the fact that you personally have an attraction to whatever you're in/not into.

I personally prefer slash smut specifically because as an asexual girl, I feel more comfortable having complete personal detachment to the situation. Shipping, however? All sorts. All of them. Doesn't make me not an asexual, just a shipper with a preference for slash smut!

"Lesbians who read slash? LOL THEY'RE SECRETLY STRAIGHT."

I've seen another rage-inducing spin on this: "Trans guys who read slash? LOL THEY'RE JUST DELUSIONAL SLASH FANGIRLS."

I'm sure there are other gender-questioning assumptions going around, but that's the one I see most because ~lol silly girls don't actually know what they want~ ¬¬ Which is probably the same sexist bullshit that's behind most of the others, too.

Yeah, like I said in that thread, I ship because I like a pairing's dynamics and the characters' chemistry. It has nothing to do with my own orienation.

When I was a teenager I had a friend who told his mom that I read m/m stuff and her reaction was "oh, so you're a lesbian?" Not that lesbians can't read m/m stuff (I know plenty that do) but I found it slightly odd that that was her immediate assumption.
