It's not for you to say whether or not it ruins the story. Maybe not for you, but lots of people want to feel the shock of a character dying. I'm not sure why the pro-warning crowd always insists this. If a story has "choose not to use warnings" or some kind of "dark themes" label, don't read it if you're going to get upset by any of usual suspects.
