It cannot be "blackanese"

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Is there an actual name for the aesthetic mashup of African American/hip hop culture meets Far East/samurai/wuxia cultures? Like with Afro Samurai or Man with the Iron Fists, where a black protagonist in an Asian society fills the "wandering warrior" role, and the show has a current of hip-hop through it as a result? Is that kind of thing still too new or too niche to have a genre name of its own?

That does seem kind of specific, yeah.

THAT'S AMERICA-CENTRIC! What if the black character isn't American, huh?

I don't think it's that new, considering a documentary I was half-watching on PBS a little while ago about martial arts and the African American community. Might be too niche, though. I don't remember if any terms for that sort of fusion cinema came up in the show.

I think some of the Blaxpoitation movies with a strong martial arts presence were called Black Fu, but they weren't necessarily set in an Asian setting. Not sure if that's helpful or not. Are you looking for recs?

I don't think there's a name for that. It's not really that new or niche; I think the problem is actually that it's not really distinct enough to have a name. It's not really its own genre that's set off from other things and in particular from other elements of hip-hop culture - it's more the case that a sizable subset of people who like hip-hop also are really, really into kung-fu movies and ninjas and shit.

Like, Man with the Iron Fists, RZA wasn't trying to make something withn what he regarded as a new genre or anything, RZA just really likes kung-fu and wanted to make a kung-fu movie, in addition to obviously being a legend in the hip-hop community. You know? So it's not a genre. It's just a two-great-tastes kind of a thing, where there tends to be a lot of overlap between the two things both in the people who like them and in the content or the appeal of the things themselves in a lot of ways.

I thought that was just a crummy joke from Rush Hour...

What? No, dude. I mean, just speaking anecdotally, look at the stuff OP mentioned, look at the existence of the Wu-Tang Clan which is literally named after an old kung-fu movie and whose music is full of kung-fu references, look at AMVs (look at AMVs for samurai and ninja oriented series, and look at AMVs that use hip-hop, and look at the overlap). Look at Kanye's video for "Stronger". It's just something that happens quite a bit, those are just a few examples off the top of my head, but it's something that happens.
