In your opinion, who is a good actor?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
It seems like a lot of people just do not agree (especially concerning acting on television) on whether someone is a good actor or not. Maybe it’s a much more subjective sort of thing than I ever realized.

I know sometimes a role can just fit an actor and they never seem quite as good in anything else (like Mira Sorvino). Also, sometimes the actor can make a wide variety of roles fit them, but still have some misfires (like Harrison Ford). Some seem to play the same role over and over again (like Clint Eastwood). And, of course, there’s the writing, directing, and editing – any of which can play an important role in a performance. It just seems to me that a lot of the time, when someone says something about a great or a terrible actor, I don't agree with them (I think most actors are average to pretty good and even the great ones aren't great all of the time).

Gary Oldman in everything ever no discussion

I agree with your comment though. I don't think good necessarily means hitting every role out of the park.

I've always really liked John Lithgow. Just because the first time I saw him out of his role on 3rd Rock from the Sun was in Dexter, and the immense change in character just blew me away.

Along the same line, Bryan Cranston. I had to look his name up just then because he's Hal from Malcolm in the Middle to me, and then Breaking Bad happened! Now he's scary as shit! It's freaking awesome!

I guess I just think an actor that can be really sweet and charming as one role and then turn around and scare the pants off me as another is what I think most defines an awesome actor to me. Versatility!

Lithgow and Cranston are both pretty amazing to me. 3rd Rock from the Sun was kind of amazing if you think about it, it was a pretty cheesy and weird premise but it completely worked because the actors totally got into it.

I don't think it's easy to be able to pull off now only different roles but comedy versus drama, many actors only have a real talent for one.

I think it's definitely subjective, but to me, when someone can play vastly different characters and seem believable as all of them, I think they're a pretty good actor. Or if it's someone I've only seen in one thing but they're really convincing in whatever that role is, I'll probably think they're a good actor unless/until I see something to convince me otherwise.

There are some actors who seem to just play the same character over and over, and then I'll see them on a talkshow or whatever and their real personality seems essentially the same as the characters they play, but lots of people will talk about how great an actor they are...I don't really get that.

Pretty much the only time I'll ever say an actor is bad, though, is when it comes across as really obvious they're just reading lines and it doesn't sound convincing at all and completely takes me out of the show/movie. I can honestly only remember that happening a few times, though.

Brad Pitt is amazing. He actually changes for each role, not just character but physically, his voice, his mannerisms. The full thing. Which sounds obvious but a lot of actors are just "Sally Mae as Wanda" whereas I feel he actually becomes the character.

I think a good actor is someone who disappears into the role. So you're not looking at the screen thinking about the actor, or maybe you don't even realize it's them. Brie Larson is one of those as well, she fucking disappears into every role I can't even recognize her most of the time. It's amazing.
