A lot of people use that on LJ or DW, and then either choose not to warn or put notes with warnings/spoilers at the end of their fic on AO3. It's a pretty good way to go about things and please most people, usually. I have seen some people bitch about people who choose not to warn, but in my experience, if someone specifically marks something like that, it means there's probably going to be something like character death, etc, in the mix and you're reading at your own risk.

CNTW: Some people post this on all of their fics, and note it on the masterlist, so as not to take away the impact of the fics in which the lack of warning is applicable. That makes sense to me as well; if you think they're being a bad author by doing so, you now have ample warning not to read them.

(Regarding the coding thing above, for an author in that situation, you would simply put 'none' in the white-text of the safer stories.)

I haven't ever run across people using CNTW on all their fics and noting it in their materlist, but I agree with you and don't see anything wrong with that. It still gives potential readers a heads-up that the fics could contain things they may not want to read. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

What does it mean to label CNTW? (I know what the acronym means but I don't understand how it's meant to be applied.) Does it just mean "There could be creepy/upsetting content here but I don't want to say exactly what that is"?

Is this the same as on AO3 "author chose not to use archive warnings"? I'm so confused by all this stuff. I sort of miss the days when it was just genre and rating. I could make a pretty good educated guess on that alone. Now i'm just always confused about what I'm supposed to expect...

It's the same thing as the "author chose not to use archive warnings" option on AO3. It's generally used to indicate that there are things that could be warned for (like character death), but the author chooses not to warn for various reasons. Like the commenter up thread stated, though, some people will just label all their stories that and then make a note of it, so people are aware that any of them might contain elements they don't want to read. Some authors who use that option put their notes with warnings at the end of a story, too, so anyone who wants to know beforehand can scroll down and read them, but people who don't want to be spoiled can easily avoid them.

Choose Not to Warn is a perfectly valid warning. If the author posted CNTW on their fics, anyone freaking out about the 'appropriate levels of warnings' or what have you isn't worth the effort of responding to.
