Yeah. The Spanish Civil War was almost a prequel for the world war in Europe; Nazi Germany used it as a testing ground for new air-to-ground tactics to horrific results.

So Spain wasn't terribly involved in WWII partly because it was terribly involved in a horrific conflict the decade prior.

Ah. I knew it stayed out of it because it had its very own fascist dictator fucking everything up, but I'd forgotten the Nazi/air-to-ground connection.

Both sides actually got foreign aid; the foreign aid to the fascists was just much, much more effective. The Republicans mostly got foreign volunteer troops drawn from the ranks of radical leftists around the world, along with some munitions from the Soviet Union, as I recall; the Nationalists got quite a lot of real military aid in terms of actual troops, aircraft, munitions, etc from the fascist states, most notably Italy and Germany. Believe there was an incident where two Garibaldi Brigades faced off against each other - one sent by the Italian government to help the Nationalists, one made up of Italian leftist volunteers.

Anyway, yes, it was a pretty brutal thing and very much a preview of what mechanization was going to mean in the 2nd World War and the massive usefulness of air power.
