Went out to dinner with my family. Somehow, me insisting that Pluto should still be a planet led to my very straight-laced parents making 9/11 jokes. I am confused.

This sounds like a stupid conversation on all sides.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt

The defense of Pluto is never stupid.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's always rather stupid. Who cares whether or not it's called a planet? Such a silly thing to have become a thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
sa

I think it's just a lot of childhood nostalgia.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

So what the fuck was the point of changing it?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
da

Because it doesn't meet the qualifiers for 'planet'

That's it. It's not huge.

As we discover more of the universe, definitions become more set in stone for different things and it turns out Pluto is not a planet-planet but a dwarf planet with 6 siblings floating around.

Analogy: Say when people first saw ferrets they thought they were rats, so they called them rats. Then people learnt more about biology and ferrets and realised they were not rats, so they're no longer called rats*

*I made this up since I can't be assed to find a real analogy. Defintions get redefined all the time as we find out more is what i'm getting at

tl;dr science!

I made this up since I can't be assed to find a real analogy.

Pandas. All sorts of reclassification going down there. Both Red and Giant Pandas have been shifted around between Ursidae (bears) and Procyonidae (raccoons), with Giant Pandas eventually being settled back in Ursidae and Red Pandas being given their own family (Ailuridae). (Remember the old 'panda bears are actually closer to raccoons than bears' thing? Turns out, nope, they really are bears. Ailuridae is closer to Procyonidae, though.)

Pluto isn't even the biggest rock in that part of space though, Pluto totally shouldn't be a planet!

runs and hides

(Anonymous) 2013-04-08 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Do these rocks have a Sailor Senshi named after them? :D

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
YES. Someone think about Sailor Pluto here.

I never understood the big fuss about Pluto. : /

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I mostly just feel bad for it. Poor thing, being stripped of it's title as a planet :(

I may have too much empathy for non-living things...

I have the Tumblr post for you! That time people anthropomorphized Earth and Mars and made comics about them. [SFW] http://waywardchevyimpala.tumblr.com/post/31754933300

Totally agree! I thought Pluto should still be a planet, but then I took a n astronomy course at school.

It absolutely does not qualify as a planet.

I know, right?

It is just a tiny, tiny rock, surrounded by tiny (and slightly larger, but still tiny) rocks...

I only read the part in my QI book about it, so I don't really remember the specifics

It may not be real planet but it will always be a planet in my heart. A heart planet.

I'm kidding but I like the little guy for some weird reason.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
It's a space rock with the soul of a planet~

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-04-09 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
And who knows~? Maybe that rock is even granite~

(There are only so many things that rhyme with planet.)

Pluto will always be a planet in my heart.

I don't even know why. It's not like I cared about it before its demotion, and I knew since grade school that it really didn't meet the qualifications.... but dammit, Pluto is totally a planet to me and nothing can change that. I may have had arguments with myself over this.

I, uh, have no idea what's going on with your parents though.

Don't worry Pluto, I'm not a planet either.

At least Holst's Planets Suite is now correct again.

This video elegantly and hilariously explains why Pluto is not, and should not be classified as a planet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_2gbGXzFbs
