It looks like Oreos were inspired BY Hydrox cookies.

Yep, although as a kid, I always assumed Hydrox was a cheap knick-off because we almost never bought recognizable brands.

There's an episode of Will and Grace with Kevin Bacon where Bacon is really cheap all the time and at one point he suggests opening a package of Hydrox and splitting a can of Shasta soda.
