I think it's popular because a lot of the shippers see themselves as Stiles (which is one of the reasons why his character's more twisted aspects are more ignored) and because it fits into the seme/uke kind of slash. (Seriously, if I have to read one more fic that makes it seem as if Derek has like, a foot on Stiles I am going to scream. They about the same height!)

So yes, I think it would, but I think it wouldn't be received as well. (And therefore give the shippers less delusion).

I thought the character was generally popular because he's the easiest to relate to on top of being one of the funniest. Plus it's pretty common for people to ship characters they find attractive, so there's also that. Not everyone pictures themselves in the pairings so...

I think anon meant "sees themselves"=relate to - not a literal self insert but more he's the easiest to relate to? But maybe not.
