I think "we're on a boat, pun intended" was the spark here.

At the time I was like "Adorable! Not my thing, but it's great how they're acknowledging slash fans and not mocking them!"

Now I'm like "WHY WHY DID YOU DO THAT. DO YOU SEE WHAT CHAOS YOU'VE UNLEASHED?!"

Urgh, this. And now the shippers have made the actors really uncomfortable, which is the other reason I don't particularly care for Sterek being canon. I wouldn't want the actors being put into a situation they'd rather avoid just because a bunch of shippers acted like they were entitled to it.

I wasn't aware the actors were feeling uncomfortable, was that at a con?
I'm not sure what you mean about "a situation", unless you're talking about them not wanting to play a queer character..? Anyway, there is zero chance that Jeff Davis is going to do this because of a "bunch of shippers". There is a way way bigger picture, here. If he does it, it wont be the fans fault :\

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I wasn't clear XD

I've heard that Dylan O'Brien and Tyler Hoechlin were pretty chill about it, but then they came across some of the more random shippers, and now they're a little leery of it. I mean, they've still handled it really well, and I give lots of credit to them for it.

And by situation, I mean that if, because of shipper rabidness, they are uncomfortable having scenes like that together, I don't think Jeff Davies would make them.

I don't think either of them would mind playing a queer character-- and if I understand it right, Stiles actually is played with bisexual tendencies? But that could have been something I just heard.

Fandom is like a stray cat. You do not indulge it, or else suddenly it'll beg for more food, and then you accidentally adopted it, but now it turns out it's not actually a cat but the Cable Guy all along.

Now I really want a fandom version of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

Best plot twist ever.

I'm relatively new to fandom. Was Sterek not that big until that thing?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-09 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't in the fandom then either... but I'm sure that before that video "Sterek will be canon in season 3" wouldn't have been a thing people said, thought, or wrote tumblr posts about. And that kind of thinking has drawn in all kinds of people who were ignoring Teen Wolf before.

Huh... I dunno. It probably gave them a huge boost but I bet you some of the really delusional ones would still be just as delusional.

Sterek was already really big and something that people wanted to become canon prior to the video. It kind of exploded within the fandom a few months prior to season 2 airing, and the fandom grew a lot as more people started watching the show. The video (and the whole poll it was tied to) definitely helped fan the Sterek flames, though, and caught the interest of a lot of people who weren't aware of the show, the fandom, or the ship beforehand.

Huh, wow. So that big boom you're talking about before season two was... because of what reason? Do you know? (Besides the increase in fans. Unless that's the only reason?)

Ah, I've never seen the video, just the gifs, and this is the first I've heard about the poll. But it's interesting how trying to get fan involvement impacted shipping dynamics.

Thank you for informing me, anon. You're really helpful.

Glad to be of service! I like being able to share my knowledge, lol.

I actually joined the fandom after season 1 finished and a few months before it blew up online (the teen wolf tag on Tumblr was still at least half comprised of stuff from the Michael J Fox movie). I'm not sure of the exact reasons that it blew up so quickly, but there were actually a lot of people brought into the fandom through Sterek fic, so that had a hand in it. I know the /report podcast and a few BNFs in larger fandoms started talking about the fic and people started reading it, then some of those people ended up watching the show and talking about it. Sterek kind of blew up as a result, and then there was the poll.

I can't remember if it was an EW or After Elton poll for best couple, but the video was made and posted on the show's official Tumblr as a way to encourage fans to vote. There were already some OTT shippers at that point (as with all ships, lol), but things seemed to get even crazier after that, since a lot of people started to assume that the show acknowledging the popularity of Sterek = proof it was going to be canon. Which was especially funny, since the video was something that Jeff and the writers didn't have a direct hand in.

The timing of the show probably had some impact on the growth of the fandom, too, since it airs in the summer and there aren't a ton of other (US, at least) shows to compete with. Hot cast members and shippability helps, too.

Same anon here, and actually I got my wires crossed about the poll and the video. The video was actually made to encourage fans to vote for the show for Best Choice Summer Show for the Teen Choice Awards. The poll shenanigans came after.

Huuuuuhhhhhh. For some reason this is so fascinating to me. It seems like there were just a bunch of little things that all contributed in a big way to the shippers being too loud and large. Like a bunch of little snowflakes that make up an avalanche.

This all kinda makes me excited to see how this goes with season three. Because you and I both know it's not going to be canon and, in fact, they've made it known that there aren't even going to be that many scenes with the two of them together at all. I guess we can only hope that is gives other ships more strength so that it can all even out and quiet down. But you know how people can be. Even when a ship is sunk there will be those who go down with it, delusional to the end.

Haha, talks like this always make me feel like should have a history book attached. But again, thank you so much! <3 I really appreciate it.

It does seem to be the case of a lot of little things at once. It would be really interesting if someone did a timeline or write-up of the progression of the fandom, but given how hard it is to track certain things on Tumblr, that would probably involve more work than it was worth.

It should definitely be interesting to see where things go! I'm hoping some other ships do gain a bit of ground, too. Tt seems like there already are more and more multi-shippers cropping up in fandom. Sterek still rules the fandom, as it were, but it's nice to see support for other things slowly trickling in, too.

You're very welcome! I enjoy talking about these things, but I tend to be a lurker on Tumblr and other places that the fandom is active and don't really engage people. I love the TW threads here since I can talk to people about the show since most people seem to be more middle-road and not the scary-intense Sterek fans or bitter Scott fans (not that I can totally blame Scott fans for being bitter) that seem to make up the louder parts of Tumblr fandom.

I know right? That would be super cool but just imagining the job makes me shiver.

Yeah, I agree. It's probably because I'm a casual multishipper myself. I like variety but more than that it would be nice to have a balance of power between fans. You know, as long as we don't end up with ship wars. I could do without that.

Ha, I'm the same way. I realized recently that F!S is the only place I actually comment. Ever. I'm just a huge lurker most of the time. And the reasons you list are why I like talking here too. I always feel awkward in main fandom because I think a lot of Sterek is OOC and I adore Scott so it's awkward around most Sterek fans. Then with Scott fans, I feel bad for them but to me they're just as over the top as Sterek fans sometimes. It's weird, essentially. But it's not weird here, which is great. I mean, just think of the level-headed discussions that could crop up here about anything from shipping to plot once season three comes out. That's something to look forward to.
