I think "you have to look for it" definitely adds to the appeal. But also there's a certain fun dissonance to the character--he does seem bland the moment he introduces himself to Pepper. He does look more like an accountant than anything, just an average little fellow. And then he wordlessly blows doors off their hinges without missing a beat, calmly addresses a giant, fire-spewing robot-thing like it's another day at the office, and very politely pulls a BFG on an alien deity-thing. And gets in a "why you suck" speech and a clever one-liner.

All while looking like he could do your taxes.

That's fantastic.
