This. I like the book, as much as I've read of it so far, and it does clarify a lot of character points for me, but having read the book is NOT mandatory to enjoying and participating in the MOVIE fandom. I feel the same way about having seen the musical independent of the film, but the Les Mis fandom, much as I love it, can be reaaal precious about what you should know before you speak up about stuff; like, I sometimes feel like if you haven't seen every adaptation, read the entire book, and done independent research on scholarly articles about Victor Hugo's intent/background/first drafts, you're a poseur and johnny-come-lately who should shut up and let the grownups talk. so maybe you can learn something. But I think that's just natural to a pretty old, well developed fandom that twas pretty small and tight knit before the movie came out and there was an influx of newbies.
