I agree that it's a bad idea to idealise Eponine. I feel very sorry for her as a character in the movie/musical. She's clearly unhappy with her lot in life and longs for the escape that she feels Marius represents, and is more in love with an idealised version of him she invented inside her head than the actual person he is. The legacy of her parents help to destroy her and for me, that's tragic.

Having said that, people demonising Cosette because Marius loved her instead is really icky to me. I understand that unrequited love hurts, but I hate this cultural movement that seems to say that if you love somebody, they are duty-bound to love you back and if they don't, they're a terrible person. It's unrealistic, it's unhealthy, and it disregards the right of other people.
