Okay, I may be unforgivably old-school here, but while I respect a woman's right to be as clothed or unclothed as she choses, I also think that you've got to respect the on-looker's right to not be involved in your (arguably) sexual performance. Or, at least, those were the going rules back when I was a wee young lass going to sex parties. So people who get nekkid (or wear clothes that seem to be intended to display the fact that, ooh la la! you can see my lady bits! piss me off because to me it reads like pulling someone into your kink when they haven't consented. (Yes, nekkidness is not inherently sexual. But it reads as sexual to a whole heck of a lot of people, so it still feels like non-consent.)

But uh. She also drives me batshit in other ways. I don't know, man, that woman is like my personal combination of kryptonite and fingernails on a blackboard.

Ah. You've explained this in a way I understand. I don't see nudity as inherently sexual at all, so this perspective doesn't occur to me. While I actually really like Amanda Palmer's general attitude of being sexy and female on her own terms... I do know people who are uncomfortable with nudity and I try not to force my values on them, particularly in public.

Agreed with the whole "forcing sexuality on people" thing.
Fucking hate that.

It's like running up to an ass load of strangers and shoving your diaper inflation vore porn in their face, and then crying "OMGZ HOW DAER U JUDJ ME SEXIST IM JUST BEING COMFURTBLE REBUL REBUL FITE SOCIETY."

Uh, no. If you want to make a nude calendar or something, do it, but don't force it on the general public that has absolutely no interest in that shit.

Thank you, this explains my feelings perfectly. I wouldn't care about it if society hadn't deemed nudity inherently sexual, but because it has, being naked or partially-naked has a sexual connotation whether you want it to or not.

this is actually one of the best explanations i've come across that addresses this whole public nudity phenomenon without getting all slut-shamey, especially: Yes, nekkidness is not inherently sexual. But it reads as sexual to a whole heck of a lot of people, so it still feels like non-consent.

I agree with every part of this (apart from the attending sex parties bit. I would be the person going "No thanks, you have fun though.")

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. There was a Dan Savage letter a few years back where he told a BDSM-practicing couple off for performing obvious master-slave roleplay in front of their families, and his argument was very similar. Quote: "that's not seeking acceptance, that's demanding participation".

It's not a woman's fault that her tits are so sexualized. A few hundred years back you would have said the same things about female ankles, so lol at you for linking showing tits to forcing sex on someone.

(Anonymous) 2013-04-11 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
fantastic. we don't live in a few centuries ago though do we? you pushing your boobs in my face now and 500 years ago is sexual, but nice try.

lol shut the fuck up
