Er. We must have watched different movies. It hardly idealized her. In fact, Eponine outright states, in A Heart Full of Love, "He was never mine to lose. Why regret what cannot be?"

The fans idealizing her, however, is a different matter, and not the fault of the movie or musical, but rather, the fault of a society which teaches us someone DESERVES the love of someone else if they do enough for them. They turn Eponine into a Nice Girl (TM), the female equivalent of a Nice Guy (TM).

Something I like about the musical is how different her part is in One Day More as opposed to the others. She speaks in past tense, and really, when you pay attention, she's basically laying out she's planning on dying. "One more day all on my own. One more day with him not caring. What a life I might have known, but he never saw me there."

well, I didn't think that she 'deserved' his love but I did think she was likable and sympathetic. (also I'm not seeing how that line in AHFoL makes her 'un-idealized'? not being bitchy I am genuinely confused lol)

She knew she couldn't have him, that he didn't think of her that way, but she still selfishly tried to keep by keeping a letter from him, knowing that he'd go to the barricade and die. And this is on top of her, "But he never saw me there." Uh, yeah, he did, Eponine. He just didn't view you in a romantic light, so quit whining. Yeah, heartbreak hurts, but quit acting entitled to his affections.
