...But she wasn't that selfless. She kept the letter from Marius because she knew him well enough to know how he'd react. She basically went, "I'm not giving him up, we'll die together and then no one else can have him."

Her actions and love for him betrayed her in the end, sure, but she still... Left out the information that caused him to choose that situation.

And there you go mixing movie/musical in with book canon. The thing about dying together is entirely from the book. If someone hadn't read the book, that would probably not be the first thing to occur to them as her motivation for keeping the letter. (I saw the musical long before reading the book, and I sure didn't think it.) You can if you want to, but it's not canon like in the book.

I know, not ENTIRELY selfless, but given the example she had from her parents? I would have thought she'd be much worse. She loved him even if he didn't love her in return, she wasn't hateful or vicious to Cosette...she didn't pass on the letter, but she didn't kill it fire either. I don't think it's entirely fair to say that her motivation was to have him die with her so that no one else could have him.

But of course, ymmv! The great thing about art and film is that you can interpret it different ways ^^
