I had braces to close my gap when I was a teen, and it actually damaged one of my front teeth, so now I need a root canal and a cap. And, when I lost my retainer in college, the gap re-emerged. The icing on the cake was the shitty orthodontist, when I was having a panic attack in the chair when they made a mold for the retainer, was all "you need to calm down or we'll need to cement the retainer to the back of your teeth like we do for the bottom teeth." Now, 15 years later, I still have that bottom retainer (but can't eat corn on the cob, apples on the core, or chew gum because of it), and my upper teeth look the same as before. I'd still have a dead tooth that I'd need fixed, but at least they'd be close together.
