If you only pick and choose from the Bible and do not believe that all of its words are true, you are not a real Christian.
If you just believe in a higher being/god/what have you, then you're "just" a deist.

Ah yes, the excuse that the Bible is just metaphorical.

Picking and choosing. Learning how to treat your slave is only a metaphor for... I dunno, and the good stuff is the true religion the "non-crazy" Christians all follow, right?

All that stuff about slaves in Leviticus? Written for and by the people who were living at that time (i.e the Jews). Christians didn't exist as a people at that time.

There's a reason why Christians are called what we're called. While our religion is informed by our shared past with the Jews and the words found in the Old Testament, the words of Christ and the New Testament are the foundation upon which our faith is built. Christ came to transform the Word and do away with all the old laws and traditions, including those very same laws from Leviticus.

So no, it's not picking and choosing. It's understanding what the hell my faith is all about, where it came from, and what it all means. So I'll thank you kindly to stop throwing your uneducated and insulting opinions at me.

Thank you! I'm so sick of people telling me that I have to believe in Old Testament Law to be a Christian. My law is this, Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind, and Love your neighbor as yourself. Those are the great commandments, they supercede everything that came before.

Take a close look at the Ten Commandments. The "Love God, and Love Man" two laws are a simple paraphrasing of the Ten Commandments.

Heck, when it comes to metaphor, Jesus Himself sure liked to use metaphor, simile, and allegory to explain really complex stuff. Humanity loves a good metaphor (or even a God metaphor).

I don't know which New testament have you been reading, but in mine Jesus says this “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.”

And this is the same Christ that had no problem overturning money-changers' tables and didn't care one lick about the laws of not working on the sabbath or marriage laws about what a women should do should she become a widow before having children. It's very clear from Christ's actions in the New Testament that 'fulfill the law' does not mean 'uphold the law' in the strict sense that you're reading this particular passage. The word fulfill doesnt just mean 'to make so;' it also means 'to make something more than it has been' or 'bring to fruition.' Christ is actually pretty clear about the fact that he considers some 'law' to be simply the vanity and avarice of men for which he has no regard.

Of course you also have to acknowledge that a lot of the laws of Moses had, by Jesus' time, been so nickpicked over and people had got so strict about them that stripping a handful of grain from a few plants just because you're hungry and forgot to bring a packed lunch was considered "work".

Jesus pointed out how stupid all that nitpickery was, and pared the law down to the true spirit.

He did believe in upholding the Ten Commandments, even with the "Love the Lord your God with all your heart" and "Love your neighbour as yourself" pair of laws (which I have always understood as being the core truth of the Ten Commandments, pared down).

I have usually seen that characterised as that Jesus came to uphold the Ten Commandments. The everyday laws for living are not all quite as relevant to the 21st century (where we understand the idea of hygiene) as they were to Moses' time.

Dude, there was lots of stuff in the New Testament about how slaves should act towards their masters.

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5 NLT)

Christians who are slaves should give their masters full respect so that the name of God and his teaching will not be shamed. If your master is a Christian, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. You should work all the harder because you are helping another believer by your efforts. Teach these truths, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them. (1 Timothy 6:1-2 NLT)
